1-Step C-Plane Sapphire Lapping With Copper Plate Vs Polishing pad Case Study

C-Plane sapphire is the most commonly used crystal orientation of sapphire for a variety of applications. The high hardness of sapphire makes it challenging to machine and process to achieve high material removal rate and quality surface properties. In this case study, Qual Diamond's technical scientist, Biz Mohammed, Ph.D., presents comparison results from 1-step lapping of C-Plane sapphire wafer with the uses of composite copper plate and polishing pad.

3-Step Zinc Selenide Lapping and Polishing Case Study

Zinc Selenide (ZnSe) is often used in fabrication of optical lenses and semiconductors due to its desirable properties. The brittleness of this material makes rough grinding and polishing a challenging undertaking. In this case study, Thom Chang, the Sales Engineer at Qual Diamond, presents data from a 3-step grinding and polishing procedure carried out in Qual Diamond’s Polishing Lab. Final roughness (Ra) at angstroms level was achieved.

1-Step Lithium Niobate Thin Film Polishing Case Study

Thin-film lithium niobate (LiNbO3) is a manmade crystal with multifunctionalities. Close to 70% of radio frequency filters are made of LiNbO3 thin films. It is also hailed as 'the silicon of photonics' for the future micro-photonic devices. In this case study, we briefly review the history of this material and present results from a 1-step polishing of thin-film LiNbO3 using Dynaqual™ diamond slurry and Qual Diamond polishing pad.

Sapphire Lapping and Polishing Case Study

The featured material in this case study is sapphire. Sapphire is a unique material with many advantageous natural properties for a variety of applications. The feasibility of synthesizing sapphire allows the widespread uses of this gem from basic research to advanced technology. Here we touch on a few applications that utilize sapphire and present data on the lapping and polishing of sapphire with Qual Diamond diamond slurries.

Silicon Carbide Precision Polishing Case Study

The main objective of this case study is to test a cost effective and efficient way using 2 Qual Diamond diamond slurries for the precision polishing of Silicon Carbide (SiC). The Qual Diamond diamond slurries are able to shorten the time required for polishing and reduce a 3 step procedure to a 2-step precision polishing procedure.

Silicon Carbide Precision Polishing Comparison Study

The main objective of this comparison study is to compare performance of Qual Diamond diamond slurry with a competitor’s similar type of slurry. Results from this side to side comparison study, where particle size, duration of polishing, amount of slurry used, and polishing pad material are closely matched or the same, indicate superior performance of Qual Diamond diamond slurry to the competitor’s.

Advanced Ceramic Precision Polishing Case Study

The main objective of this case study is to test a cost-effective and efficient Qual Diamond diamond slurry for the precision polishing of advanced ceramic materials. The select material is porous alumina substrate and was polished using a Qual Diamond polycrystalline diamond slurry. The Qual Diamond diamond slurry was able to shorten the time required for polishing and reduce a multi step procedure to a 1-step precision polishing procedure.
